X.com is the best networking tool

My friend said you should f your mutual...?

A well-known X.com personality laughing in a tuxedo

I have been to a lot of conferences. Name-tag lanyards, lukewarm coffee, a keynote about disruption. The highest-value professional relationship I built last year did not come from any of them. It came from a reply to a post about changeover times.

Why it works

On X, you meet people through their thinking instead of their title. A plant manager in Ohio, a PE associate in London, and a founder in Austin can end up in the same thread arguing about preventive maintenance — and the argument is the introduction. That is a filter no conference badge can replicate.

  • Post what you actually know — niche beats broad. The factory-floor detail outperforms the leadership platitude.
  • Reply more than you post. Being a good guest in someone else’s thread is the fastest way to get invited back.
  • Move real conversations to a call. The feed is for the handshake, not the relationship.

And yes — a friend told me the real rule is “engage your mutuals.” I am choosing to believe that is what he said.
